Skydio Drone Manufacturing Gets $3.5B U.S. Boost

Skydio has revealed plans to pour $3.5 billion into Skydio drone manufacturing and related operations in the United States over the next five years, marking one of the largest commitments ever made by a domestic maker of autonomous flying systems. The San Mateo, California company announced the investment on April 24, 2026, describing it as a push to expand production, accelerate research and development, and strengthen American supply chains at a moment when demand for U.S.-built drones is climbing across public safety, national security, and critical infrastructure.

The plan is expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs at Skydio and support over 3,000 additional positions across the company’s U.S. supply chain. Skydio also said it will direct more than $1 billion toward domestic suppliers, a move aimed at deepening American capacity to build the specialized components that go into autonomous drones. Skydio already describes itself as the largest U.S.-based drone manufacturer and the world leader in flying robots, claiming to produce more dual-use drones than any company outside of China.

SkyForge Program Anchors the Expansion

A central piece of the announcement is SkyForge, a new program that Skydio says is built around the idea that the future of flight should be made in America. As part of SkyForge, the company plans to open a new U.S. manufacturing facility that will be five times larger than its current space. Skydio noted that it has outgrown four American manufacturing facilities in eight years, and the new site will be its fifth expansion to keep up with what it calls extraordinary demand.

Beyond the billion-dollar supplier investment, Skydio intends to invite select partners to co-locate production capacity alongside its own operations. Those suppliers would gain access to manufacturing space and engineering talent, which the company hopes will help incubate a wider domestic drone ecosystem. Some components currently built overseas would either expand in the U.S. or begin production here for the first time under the arrangement. Skydio’s existing manufacturing operation in Hayward, California already runs parts intake, assembly, calibration, and burn-in testing on every unit before shipment, and the company plans to carry that same quality framework into the larger facility.

Demand Across Defense, Public Safety, and Utilities

The manufacturing push is being driven by a customer base that Skydio describes as rapidly growing. The company reports that it has shipped more than 60,000 flying robots to over 3,800 customers to date. That group includes more than 1,200 public safety agencies across the country, every branch of the U.S. military, and the armed forces of 29 allied nations. More than 450 utility and energy companies also use Skydio systems for infrastructure inspection and monitoring.

Skydio recently landed a notable contract securing U.S. Air Force bases in the Middle East, reflecting the kind of government demand the company is preparing to meet at greater scale. Public safety is another growth engine: the company says its Drone as First Responder system helps agencies arrive on scene ahead of a patrol unit 71 percent of the time and resolves nearly a quarter of calls without sending officers. Skydio argues that this type of aerial awareness has shifted drones from specialty tools into everyday operational infrastructure for police, fire, and emergency response teams.

The company framed the investment as tied directly to national resilience. By expanding Skydio drone manufacturing and its domestic supplier network, the company says it aims to reinforce U.S. electronics and component production and build supply chains that can hold up under pressure. That focus reflects a broader concern across Washington about reducing reliance on foreign-made drones and parts in sensitive sectors, particularly for military units and first responders.

Skydio says the $3.5 billion plan positions the United States to take a leading role in flying robotics, autonomy, manufacturing, and scale. The company will continue to design, assemble, and support its aircraft in the U.S. from its San Mateo headquarters while expanding production to match rising orders from public safety agencies, defense customers, and utility operators. For an industry that has long been shaped by overseas suppliers, the commitment represents a sizable bet that American-built autonomous drones can meet demand at home and abroad without depending on manufacturers in regions that federal officials have flagged as strategic risks.
